Google may be working on several new Android-powered Nexus devices, including an update to Nexus Q media player, the previously-rumoured smart watch, and a games console.
The Wall Street Journal has said that a planned Google Nexus games console, due for launch by the end of the year, would be based on Android and play all the games available on the Google Play store, as well as stream music and films. Reportedly designed to pre-empt Apple's expected move into the living room, it would also go head-to-head with the Ouya third-party Android console which saw considerable success on crowd-funding site Kickstarter.
Google has refused to comment on the paper's reports, but with mobile gaming growing at a rapid pace the timing would certainly seem right for a Nexus-branded games console.
With a patent on a smart watch device and a large-scale trial of its Google Glass system under way in the US, the other news doesn't come as a major surprise. The company has refused to comment on smart watch products in the past, but a Nexus smart watch is expected in the near future. Whether it will arrive before the rumoured rival device from Apple remains to be seen.
The Nexus Q, meanwhile, was launched at the company's Google I/O conference in 2012 but saw numerous delays before being cancelled outright. Designed to compete with Apple TV, the Nexus Q was slated for a complicated user interface and a high price, but these are issues Google is reportedly looking to fix in its successor.
